This old opera house is haunted by the ghost of one of its former ushers. Richard Miller was an awkward English boy with few friends, when he worked here in the late 1960s. He attended the University of Minnesota, but never seemed to be accepted by the other students there. Just like in high school, he gained a reputation for being something of a nerd. The taunting and loneliness slowly took its toll. On Saturday, February 5, 1967, he strolled into a Sears store, purchased a surplus Mauser rifle and shells, and went back to his car in the parking lot. There, the eighteen-year-old boy put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. His body was not discovered until the following Monday. He was still wearing his Guthrie Theater usher's uniform. Within weeks of his suicide, patrons in Row 18, part of the area assigned to Miller, began complaining of an usher constantly walking back and forth. They described Miller down to the large mole on his cheek. Since then, dozens of patrons, employees, ushers, actors, singers, and custodians at the theater have seen young Richard Miller walking slowly up and down the aisle in Row 18, in the catwalks, or in an exclusive section of seats called the Queen's Box. The ghost would follow witnesses with his eyes or head but never spoke or made a sound. An exorcism performed in 1994 supposedly placated his restless spirit.
Richard Miller attended Edina Morningside School in Minneapolis and lived in Territorial Hall at the university. His body was found in the parking lot of the Sears on Lake Street. He is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

ST. PAUL
Griggs Mansion
This twenty-four-room mansion, built by grocer Chauncey Griggs in 1883, is St. Paul's most haunted house. The ghostly apparition of a maid who hanged herself from the third-floor landing has been reported here since 1915. The ghost of a gardener, Charles Wade, returns to the library to consult books on gardening, and the shadowy presence of a teenage girl named Amy has been detected in the parlor. Another ghost, that of a thin man in a black suit, pops in and out of rooms during both daylight and nighttime hours. The house changes hands like a hot potato. The longest owner was the St. Paul Gallery and School of Art, which occupied the building from 1939 to 1964. Many students and teachers reported feeling the presence of spirits during that time. One student had a terrifying encounter with a ghastly, floating head in a small apartment at the rear of the house. In 1964, Griggs Mansion was purchased by Carl Weschke, founder of Llewellyn Publishing. He did extensive renovations, which seemed to increase the activity. Weschke, his maids and butler, and an investigative team from the St. Paul Pioneer Press all encountered ghostly manifestations in the house.

The house is a private residence, at 476 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55102.

Though I can not prove the history my family has been involved in law enforcement for many years in the Twin Cities. I have been told that the main lobby of City Hall housed a gallows where a huge marble statue now sits. I do not know if the gallows were ever actually used but I have seen a photo that shows the gallows in that space.
