Haunted Mississippi

Waverly Mansion, Columbus.

Said to be haunted by a young girl, whom you can hear crying, as well as the old major, John Pytchlyn, is seen riding his horse.

-Episcopal Chapel of the Cross, Madison.
See website for information.
*Website.

In this small churchyard the spirit of Helen Vick is still said to come and visit her fiancé's gravesite.

-Kings Tavern, Natchez.
No location listed.

The locals will know where it is located. It's said the spirit of a woman named Madeline still walks here and that she has been witnessed by many.

-Judge Lake Home, Vicksburg.
No location listed.

People report seeing the spirit of Mrs. Lake still in her garden.

-The Longfellow Place, Pascagoula.

It's said that the spirit of a slave who was beaten to death still walks these grounds.

In 1930 William Faulkner purchased what was then known as "The Bailey Place," a large primitive Greek Revival house that pre-dated the Civil War, standing on four acres of cedars and hardwood. His ghost has been seen wandering the grounds and writing on a wall in one of his old rooms.

-The Post House, Natchez.
Location unknown.

Once the old Natchez Post Office, many people have lived here since it became a private residence. They say the second floor is haunted by a spirit named Madeline. Could she be the same Madeline haunting the Kings Tavern, also in Natchez?

-Piney Grove Baptist Church, Polkville.
Cemetery located 2 miles north of Polkville.

I couldn't find the church but I did find the cemetery which is, most likely, located on the same grounds. As well as numerous odd forms being recorded in the cemetery here, the church is said to be haunted by the groom of a young woman who fell to her death from the stairs. He's still seen wandering in his tuxedo.

-The Lyric Theater, Tupelo.
See website for information.

On April 5th, 1936, a tornado roared through Tupelo and left devastation in its wake. Many of the injured and dying were brought to the Lyric, where popcorn machines were used to sterilize medical instruments. It's said that many of these poor souls still wander the theater today.

-Palestine Graveyard, Picayune.

Located west of Picayune, Pearl River County, Mississippi. The cemetery is adjacent to New Palestine Baptist Church and is composed of the original church cemetery plus being the predominant city cemetery for Picayune. The spirit of a bride dressed for her wedding day has been spotted here numerous times.

-John Martin's Fine Dining Restaurant, Natchez.
70 Silver St.

The spirit of a prostitute, killed by her own son when he discovered her profession, is still wandering John Martin's. Staff has reported the sound of footsteps descending the stairs, lights flickering and doors slamming as if propelled by unseen hands.

-Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi.
Adjacent to U S Highway 90.

Keesler was established in 1941 when the City provided nearly 3,600 acres of land for the facility. Since its first class graduated in January 1942, Keesler has graduated over 2,000,000 students. An estimated 12,000 military personnel and 3,600 civilians are stationed at the base. The total number includes Air Force Reserve and students in training.

A young airman hung himself here and it's said the 335th training squadron has a haunted wing. He's been known to tie knots throughout young airmen's boot strings.

-Old Capitol, Jackson.
100 S. State St. 601-359-6920

Dating from 1833, the Greek Revival edifice now houses the state historical museum. It served as the seat of state government until the completion of the present capitol building in 1903. Back in the 1800's a legislator passed from a heart attack. He slipped behind his desk and hit the floor and to this day, around 5:30pm in the afternoon, you can sometimes here him fall. Also, there have been many reports of doors slamming and banging in the evening.

-Bogue Chitto Swamp, Dekalb.
No location found.

Most likely this is spelled wrong, as I can find no information on it. It's said that the spirit of a man dressed in black haunts the bridge here. You can hear his footsteps and, if your car stall halfway through the bridge -- as some cars are known to do -- he very well might appear to you as if looking for a ride.

Former Biloxi Regional Hospital, Biloxi.
Location unknown.

Doors will slam and, when this was a working hospital, the spirits of young girls would appear to dying patients. Check the link above for an actual investigation on grounds for more information.

-City cemetery, Kosciusko.
See website for city information.

In this historical graveyard there is a statue that some say weeps. Also, on the anniversary date of her passing, a red rose will appear in her hands.

-Marine Resource Center, Biloxi.
No location found.

On the third floor there is a spirit that seems to terrorize the women here. To date, no women are assigned to work this floor in the evening as two have left previously, overcome with hysterics, due to the haunting activities.

-The Hospital in Downtown Laurel, Laurel.
See website for city information.

The spirits of two girls are said to haunt the Laurel Hospital.

-Saint Anthony Hall, U of M, University.
See website for information.

Several people have seen a male figure in doorways where there was not, and could not, possibly be someone. The presence is thought to be that of a brother named Jim Bridges whom died on the way home from a game at LSU. This house has a fairly complicated 120 year history involving 3 fires, several rebuildings, and one relocation. The very first Saint Anthony Hall was actually the first fraternity house in the state of Mississippi and it resembled a small castle (complete with turret).
-MERIDIAN

Merrehope Mansion

People walking by this mansion report seeing the apparition of a woman looking out an upstairs window. She is Eugenia Gary, daughter of John Gary, who bought the house in 1868. Although she never lived here while alive, Eugenia has taken up residence in the restored mansion. She is seen in the center hall and near the windows on the first and second floors. She usually wears a green plaid hoopskirt with a solid green blouse. She shares the house with another ghost, a former schoolteacher who haunts his room on the second floor. In the 1940s, the depressed man set up a line of whiskey bottles on the fireplace mantel and started shooting them. When the last bottle was smashed, he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

The house is owned by the Merrehope Restorations Foundation, Meridian, MS 39301

-NATCHEZ

Longwood

Dr. Haller Nutt and his wife Julia haunt their unfinished mansion. Construction was nearly complete when the Civil War broke out, forcing the Nutts to live in the basement of their magnificent house. Dr. Nutt died in 1864, and the interior of the great house was never finished. Locals dubbed the thirty-two-room, octagonal mansion "Nutt's Folly," although today it is a popular Natchez attraction and a national historic landmark. The Nutts relish the new attention lavished on their former home and have been known to appear to tour guides. Mrs. Nutt is seen on the staircase, while Dr. Nutt prefers the garden area. One groundskeeper quit recently after seeing the good doctor standing under a tree.
