Visitors to the dome observation deck here report hearing the sounds of a man sobbing, usually on the southeast side of the building. There are several likely candidates for the Capitol Ghost. One is a prison inmate who had a heart attack in 1968 while stringing Christmas lights on the outside of the dome. Another possibility is a 1950s man who fell ten floors when he leaned too far over the railing of the spiral staircase. Or perhaps the spirit is that of an Indian ghost sensed in the lower basement of the building. The Indians believed the hill on which the capitol now stands was sacred.

Several buildings on this Lincoln campus are said to be haunted. The ghost of a student who fell from the overhead rigging and died on the stage at the Temple Building returns to haunt his fellow thespians. The student died in the 1940s, while preparing for a performance of Macbeth. Now, whenever that Shakespearean play is presented, his ghost is seen near the stage. In the 1970s, a ghostly figure was reported in the east basement studios of KUON-TV in the building. More recently, a ghost in the light booth in the auditorium faded from view in front of several witnesses. In the 1980s, unexplainable thumping sounds started coming from the attic. Pound Hall is haunted by Lucy, a 1960s hippie who leaped to her death from the fifth floor of her dorm. Her thin, wispy ghost is seen in her former room, where books open by themselves or fall to the floor for no apparent reason. Finally, a cold, unidentified presence is said to lurk in the corridors of Raymond Hall.
