-Vale End Cemetery, Wilton.

Vale End Cemetery in Wilton, off of Frye Highway, is haunted by many ghosts. The front right corner is called "the cold corner" because the entire corner of the cemetery is at least ten degrees colder than the rest of the area all the time. The most famous ghost of the cemetery is "the Blue Lady", Mary Spaulding. Her grave can be found in the right corner and is often glowing. She can be seen on foggy nights rising two to six feet above the ground in a blue, vertical streak of light near her grave. Also, a little girl, the first one to have been buried there, wanders around looking for her headstone because it was moved at some point. Her father, known as the old man, stays around the cul-de-sac end of the road watching out for her and the rest of the cemetery. He gets very upset easily and has been known to chase people out. There are many orbs seen at night and many of the headstones glow. Footsteps can be heard almost all the time, and the old man whistles if he wants to scare people.

During an investigation of the house, a paranormal investigator fell through the attic floor, through the kitchen floor, and died on contact in the basement and now haunts the house from down there. The house is on private property and is across the street from an auction house. There have been reports of cold activity in recent years, and the house had a very evil feel to it when I went in. It feels as though someone or something is very mad that you are in there, and wants you out immediately.

-NORTH SALEM

Mystery Hill

This thirty-acre sacred site is probably the oldest surviving settlement on the North America continent. It has been called America's Stonehenge. A 4.5-ton sacrificial altar here is grooved for the collection of blood. Underneath the altar, a speaking tube runs to a huge underground chamber, 22 feet wide and 6.5 feet high. This oracle chamber contains a drawing of an ibex and other mysterious carvings. One high-walled corridor leads to a central temple room, and the outlying stones are arranged to detect the change of seasons and the directions of the compass. The Tomb of Lost Souls is the only chamber with an east-west axis. Early colonists discovered the unusual grouping of stone walls and named it Mystery Hill. They avoided the area and had no idea of its extensive underground features. Early archeologists assumed that Mystery Hill was built by Indians, but recent evidence suggests it was built by a Mediterranean civilization around 2025 Pieces of charcoal wedged between stones at the site have been carbon-dated at 4,000 years old, and several scholars believe the workmanship and carvings at Mystery Hill are Minoan or Phoenician. The popular G-stone at the site is actually two letters from the Phoenician alphabet, and rock carvings show outlines of Phoenician sailing vessels. The gods worshiped at this site were certainly not the gods of the American Indians. In fact, some researchers believe the site was dedicated to the ancient god Baal. After visiting the site in 1937, H. P. Lovecraft was inspired to write his famous short story, "The Dunwich Horror."

North Salem is twelve miles east of Nashua on Highway 111. Take Exit 3 east from I-93 and follow Highway 111 for five miles to the junction of Island Pond Road and Haverhill Road. Go south on Haverhill Road to the park entrance. America's Stonehenge, P.O. Box 84, North Salem, NH 03073. Phone: 603-893-8300
