Cole Mountain
The orange-red light seen on Cole Mountain has mystified people since the middle of the nineteenth century. The ball of light bobs up and down over the mountainside. No one has gotten close to the luminous ball, and most sightings take place from the road at the base of the mountain. Legend says the light is from the lantern of an old slave who worked on the Charles Jones plantation. The loyal slave disappeared on the side of the mountain during a racoon hunt and was never seen again. Nobody accused the slave of escaping. Most thought he just got lost in the woods.
Moorefield is located at the junction of Highway 55 and U.S. Highway 220 in the eastern tip of West Virginia. Cole Mountain is located south of town. The best viewing area is from Highway 55.
