-LAND O'LAKES
Summerwind Estate

Wisconsin's most famous haunted house was built in 1916 by Robert Lamont, who later became secretary of commerce under President Hoover. It is said that Lamont once fired two shots at a ghost that appeared in his kitchen. The house had many owners over the years, but only a few realized they were living with ghosts. Arnold and Ginger Hinshaw and their six children moved into the house in 1970. Within a few days of unpacking, they realized the house was possessed by spirits. Shadows moved through the house, mumbling voices were heard, and the apparition of a woman was frequently seen floating through the French doors into the parlor. Other strange things went on in the house. Windows opened by themselves, appliances failed for no reason, and eerie noises echoed through the house at night. Then, while remodeling a closet, the couple found the mummified remains of a human corpse. Their supernatural house soon became too much for the Hinshaws. Arnold started hinting that he was possessed by demons and finally had a nervous breakdown. Ginger attempted suicide. Ginger's father Raymond Bober asked her and the children to come live with him in Granton. He bought the house and started remodeling it into a restaurant. During renovations, Bober encountered the ghost of Jonathan Carver, an eighteenth-century explorer. The ghost told Bober that it did not want anyone living on his property. According to the phantom, the Sioux Indians had deeded him the northern third of Wisconsin when he negotiated a peace between two tribes. The deed was in a black box sealed under the foundation of Summerwind. The box was never found, and Bober never completed renovations, because contractors refused to work at the haunted house. The house was abandoned in the early 1980s and soon fell into ruin. After three investors bought the twenty-room mansion in 1986, it was struck by lightning and burned down in June 1988. Only the foundation and two thirty- foot-high stone chimneys remain.
Land O'Lakes is northeastern Wisconsin on U.S. Highway 45 at the Michigan border.

Summerwind is on private property overlooking West Bay Lake in Vilas County, ten miles west of Land O'Lakes. Take Highway M north out of Boulder Junction. The stone ruins of Summerwind lie abandoned, except for the ghosts.

-MINERAL POINT
Walker-Grundy House

This log inn, built in 1836, is haunted by a murderer who was hanged in front of it. On November 1, 1842, William Caffee was hanged from a scaffold erected in the yard of the inn. Before a crowd of four thousand people, the contemptuous man rode atop his own coffin and, using two beer bottles, drummed a funeral march on the sides of the casket. Afterward, his cantankerous spirit took up residence in Walker House, and over 150 years later his ghost still walks the halls. Employees and guests complain of the scary sounds of heavy breathing, footsteps on the second floor, and a presence that turns doorknobs but never opens doors. Scary voices and poltergeist activity frequently occur in the main dining room and kitchen. In October 1981, owner Walker Calvert saw Caffee's headless ghost sitting on a bench on the back porch. The phantom stayed visible for several minutes. That same month a waitress saw the ghost, this time with a head, walking on the second floor.

Mineral Point is in Iowa County in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, at the junction of U.S. Highway 151 and Highway 23. Walker-Grundy House is open to the public. It is just southwest of town.
